Global Laser Talk October 2009
Tell Congress: The United States Must Lead in Supporting the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria!
I’m proud that the U.S. has played a key role in saving 3.5 million lives since 2001 through our contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
But we have much more work to do as nearly six million people continue to die annually of these three preventable and treatable diseases of poverty. The Global Fund is prepared to assist developing nations save more lives, but is facing a need of $5.25 billion in the coming year. This funding gap means real people are not getting access to care.
Inform on a Solution
U.S. leadership is needed to fully fund the Global Fund. For every dollar the U.S. contributes, other donor nations typically contribute $2. The U.S. share of the need for 2011 is $1.75 billion.
Call to Action
Currently, a sign-on letter to President Obama is being circulated in the House requesting least $1.75 for the Global Fund in FY11. Would Representative _____ be a cosigner on this letter? I would be happy to provide you with a copy.
Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA-9) is leading this letter, and the aide to contact is Christos Tsentas.
