Global Laser Talk January 2011

Child Survival/Vaccines

Senator/Representative XXX,
I’m not sure what your thoughts have been about the issue, but I find it unacceptable that in 2011, with all of our technological marvels, 8.8 million children die each year before their fifth birthday because of preventable or treatable conditions like malnutrition, diarrhea, or pneumonia.

Thanks to an organization called GAVI Alliance, we have the opportunity to introduce life-saving vaccines anywhere in the world. For example, GAVI has introduced a pneumonia vaccine as part of a national vaccination campaign in Nicaragua, setting a new precedent for what is possible for child survival in low-income countries.

We are asking this new Congress to begin its work boldly by supporting a $175 million contribution to GAVI for child pneumonia and other vaccines for fiscal year 2012. This amount is miniscule compared to the benefits it will reap. Would you be willing to support this?
