On October 10, the Center for Global Development launched a new report that underscores the central role girls play in global development and poverty alleviation. Ambassador-at-Large for Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer spoke at the launch of Start with a Girl: A New Agenda for Global Health and reminded us that we should look at “girls and women not as victims, but as agents of change.” When girls reach adolescence, explained Verveer, they reach a dangerous “precipice” filled with the trap doors of poverty,violence, sexuality without access to health information, lack of access to secondary education, and child marriage.

Take Part in Global Education Day of Action on December 10!

On December 10, the Global Campaign for Education is holding a Day of Action to encourage President Obama to lead the world in supporting a Global Fund for Education and funding it in his budget request to Congress. This Day of Action will allow all of us to not only reach out to the administration, but it will also help increase public awareness of the need for universal basic education and help people in the United States identify steps they can take to realize the goal of universal basic education by 2015.

RESULTS Educational Fund’s Education for All campaign was pleased and honored to host Mary Njoroge on her trip to the United States last week. Mary traveled to Atlanta and Athens, Georgia; Chicago; Cleveland; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C., to meet up grassroots volunteers and help them educate their communities, the media, and members of Congress about the importance of overcoming the obstacles to education that many developing nations face by supporting a Global Fund for Education.
