Your Donation in Action: It starts with one girl

For 10-year-old Meena the dream of an education in rural Afghanistan was a world away until a school for girls was finally reopened in her community. Hundreds of girls crowded the schoolhouse door on opening day, but Meena was nowhere to be seen. Her father had forbidden her to attend.

Meena, however, was determined to go to school. She knew that an education was her only way to a brighter future for herself and her family. The school administrators and teachers feared for the girl’s life knowing the terrible price that she could pay for disobeying her father: beatings, torture, or even death. Each day her smiling face quelled their fears until the fateful day came that she no longer appeared at the school’s door.

Everyone feared the worst.

To everyone's amazement, after a long absence Meena returned to school, and when she did, she told them her story.

When a letter arrived for the girl’s father from a relative in Pakistan he knew it must be urgent. But he was unable to read it. There was not one person in his large family who could read. It was then that the clever, courageous, and defiant girl stepped forward to say that she could read the letter for him.

The news was indeed urgent and the family immediately planned to leave for Pakistan. Instead of beating his child or casting her out, he wept at the wonder of one of his children being able to read. She was the first person in three generations to accomplish such a miracle. When the family returned from Pakistan she was no longer denied an education by her father, she was encouraged to continue and held up as an example for other family members and her community.

This is just one story, but critical to understanding the power education has to build bridges, heal communities, and bring women and girls into the cultural mainstream.
