Condemning white supremacy and working for equity

As we stand against bigotry and white supremacy this week, we must redouble our commitment to driving policies that undo injustice, inequity, and oppression. This means condemning the hate-filled action that we saw in Charlottesville – and also tackling the systemic forces of racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and other oppression.

We know that this oppression shapes our systems, our interactions, and our policies in this country so deeply. As a country and world, we can’t ignore the structural and intergenerational inequities – and frequent drivers of poverty – that sustain the status quo. We as a society – and by this I mean those with power and privilege, in particular – have created them over centuries, but what bad policy has helped create, good policy can help undo.

The awful events in Charlottesville also reinforce the critical importance of our own anti-oppression work as an organization. To succeed in dismantling the forces of oppression in our country and the world, we need to also dismantle them in our movement. We’ve begun this work, but we know we still have a long way to go. We are committed to getting there.

Thank you for everything you do in these challenging times, and for what you have shown is possible when we work together with courage, persistence, and commitment. Let us dedicate ourselves to intensifying our efforts and ambition for a more just and equitable country and world.
