National Outreach Event with Tavis Smiley

2014 is the 50th Anniversary of the War on Poverty. Although we’ve made great strides in reducing poverty in America since 1964, more work needs to be done. 47 million Americans, including 16 million children, are living in poverty in the United States. We have the power and ability to end poverty in America, but without the political will to get it done, the problem will continue to plague us.

To build support for this effort, RESULTS is hosting a virtual town hall event with PBS and PRI radio host, author and advocate Tavis Smiley on Tuesday, April 29 at 8:00 pm ET. Mr. Smiley is the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show and Smiley & West both from Public Radio International (PRI. He is also the author of 16 books, including his latest New York Times best-seller  The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto, co-authored with Dr. Cornell West. His forthcoming text to be published in September 2014 is Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year

Expanding upon Smiley’s pervious anti-poverty work, the Tavis Smiley Foundation recently launched Ending Poverty: America’s Silent Spaces, a $3 million four-year national initiative to examine barriers and identify solutions to reduce hardship among our most vulnerable citizens.  In 2011, he and Dr. West sponsored an 18-city Poverty Tour, designed to raise awareness of poverty in America. This will be an informative and inspiring call — we invite you to join us.

This event was a conference call and the call recording is available online at http://www.results.org/uploads/files/30892577.mp3. In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact Jos Linn ([email protected]) or Meredith Dodson ([email protected]).

Dear __________________,

How are you? I wanted to let you know about a very cool event our local RESULTS group is organizing in a few weeks. Our local RESULTS group is organizing a house party on Tuesday, April 29, to participate in a national town hall with Tavis Smiley, the host of the late-night television talk show on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show from PRI radio.

As you may know, Mr. Smiley is an author, journalist, and activist who is very outspoken about the plight of low-income working Americans. Deeply concerned about the plight of unemployed, underemployed and anxiously employed Americans, Mr. Smiley held an 18-city bus tour in August 2011 to raise awareness and put a “human face” on the nation’s poverty statistics.

Mr. Smiley will talk to us about his work on the issue of poverty and the power we as citizens have to make poverty history. We’ll then discuss the importance of folks like you and me pushing our elected leaders to address poverty in America. Our local RESULTS group is meeting from _____________________ pm ET on April 29 at ________________ and (attached is a flyer for more details).

It would mean a lot to me if you could join us. What do you think?

Take care,

________
