Over a decade ago Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) co-authored the bipartisan AIDS and Tuberculosis Relief Act of 2000, which laid the legislative groundwork for what is now the Global Fund. This week the Global Fund turns 10, and who better to send a birthday note than one of its “mothers?”

This week, RESULTS' Executive Director, Joanne Carter, hosted economist Jeffrey Sachs and Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Ethiopia's Minister of Health and the former chair of the Global Fund, on a media call to bring attention the funding crisis the Global Fund faces. Indivar provided us a comprehensive overview of what the 2012 congressional agenda will likely play out on anti-poverty issues. In addition, the call featured an overview of our 2012 U.S. Poverty Campaigns, a review of Group Planning resources, RESULTS volunteer leaders in Houston, Columbus, Broward County and Santa Fe sharing about their recent work and plans for 2012, a demonstration of how to Request a Face-to-Face Lobby Visit with a Member of Congress (our January 2012 Domestic Laser Talk), and insights on how fundraising can even help groups achieve your expansion goals and reach out to your community.

A year has passed by since the last wild polio case was detected in India. Indian investment and global support have brought things to this critical watershed moment. The next challenge is to maintain another 24 months of polio free status to truly be able to say that endemic wild polio transmission in India is a thing of the past, and to use the experience and infrastructure to raise the rates of immunization coverage among all children for the other diseases for which vaccines are available.

RESULTS has joined forces with AMREF, Save the Children, Partners In Health, PSI, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the White Ribbon Alliance and others to form the Frontline Health Workers Coalition. The coalition’s mission is to urge greater and more strategic U.S. investment in frontline health workers in the developing world. Together we are pushing the U.S. to set a bold goal to increase the number of health workers trained and supported with U.S. assistance to 250,000 by 2015 to help close the resource gap. The coalition is also working to improve the capacity and impact of existing frontline health workers.

I recently attended a presentation by Brad Fitch, president and CEO of The Congressional Management Foundation (CMF). The presentation was focused on results from The Foundation’s latest study: How Citizen Advocacy is Changing Mail Operations on Capitol Hill. As someone who is mostly involved with research support for the RESULTS Educational Fund’s Education for All campaign, I was fascinated to get a glimpse into the legislative impact of advocacy work. Although I’ve contacted my representatives before, I didn’t quite understand what happens on the other side after my message has been received. Whenever I do contact a representative I’m always amazed by how easy it is. So easy, that sometimes I’m left wondering if my message really was registered, and if so, by whom? Is there a better way I could communicate? Do they even care?

Many are calling the Super Committee a failure – but we at RESULTS are relieved at this outcome given the possibility we could have seen draconian cuts to Medicaid and (SNAP, formerly food stamps) in an unbalanced and unfair deal that locked in tax breaks for millionaires and corporations that would widen the wealth gap further. We will continue to push for smart investments in programs that make a difference in the lives of millions who live in poverty here and around the world to minimize the impact of the automatic cuts, grateful that Congress did not decimate safety net programs for tax giveaways for the “haves” this holiday season.

It is a joy to see old friends — like Grameen Bank, Freedom from Hunger, FINCA, BRAC, and Fonkoze — as well as meet new implementers and advocates that can support our work and push us to be ambitious. My greatest take away from this conference is a complete reinforcement of our advocacy on microfinance for the very poor. There is still such an amazing need to ensure financial access for all.
Join the SAVE for All campaign social media day of action to protect anti-poverty programs like Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP (food stamps), the EITC, the CTC, and others! We're trying something new -- reinforcing our message to keep the pressure on Congress to do the right thing and not balance the budget on the backs of low-income Americans by using social media. While the Super Committee has disbanded, you can tailor our laser talks and online actions (see: http://www.results.org/take_action/) to continue to communicate with policymakers on issues that are important to you. Good luck!

The October RESULTS U.S. Poverty national conference call featured guest speaker Debbie Weinstein of the Coalition on Human Needs, talking about the current work of the Super Committee and its impact on federal anti-poverty programs. Debbie did a great job at providing us an overview of the Super Committee, pointing out that the choices they make could either hurt or help people, including possible cuts to anti-poverty programs like Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP (food stamps), the EITC, the CTC, etc. The conference call also included an update on recent proposals to increase funding for Head Start and Early Head Start, as well as maintain Child Care services for low-income working families. In addition, RESULTS volunteers in Tacoma, WA, and Columbus, OH, shared recent fundraising successes.
When I first got involved in the global TB world about eight years ago, one of my first questions was “Why don’t TB programs treat children with TB?” I was told basically, from a public health perspective, it was because children aren’t infectious. Well, as a mother of three, that rationale would not work for me if one of my children had TB. In fact, of course children with TB are treated in the U.S. It’s a different story for children in low-income countries that are always at the back of the line for everything, TB care being no exception.

Charged with finding at least $1.2 trillion in savings before Thanksgiving, its work-pace will be fast and furious. Following up from our profiles of the new “Super Committee” members, RESULTS and our allies are urging all members of Congress and Super Committee members to support a balanced and fair approach to deficit reduction that protects low-income Americans and does not increase poverty.
The September 2011 RESULTS Domestic National Conference Call was a short and focused conference call, designed to end early so that RESULTS groups could take action as a group and plan strategies to deepen your impact over the next few weeks. RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter opened the conference call with an exciting announcement about our 2012 International Conference (July 21-24, 2012), planned to be our largest ever. RESULTS staff members Jos Linn and Meredith Dodson reviewed the broader budget situation in DC and specific actions to protect funding for Head Start, Early Head Start, and Child Care services for low-income working families. RESULTS volunteer Paul Hoffinger in Minnesota moderated our Shares section, including his own experiences at a town hall meeting earlier this week, as well as great stories from Columbus volunteer Ann Boer and Denver volunteer Marty Karnopp. The call ended with an update on fundraising and other key announcements from Grassroots Development Associate Cindy Levin.

It would be simpler to deal with tuberculosis if it just attacked the lungs and bodies of its victims, but TB takes an even heavier toll on the heart and mind of those who contract it. In India, the stigma and isolation are symptoms just as painful as the coughing and emaciation. The emotional toll of the disease is rarely conveyed to those who don’t experience it personally. Last year, on World TB Day, ACTION Partner Global Health Advocates India worked with the Art for Change Foundation and the Confederation of Indian Industries to bring 22 artists into firsthand experience with the human toll of TB and paint what they saw. The resulting ‘Chehera: The Human Face of TB’ Exhibition takes viewers on a emotional whirlwind through the horrors and hopes of life with TB.

What better way to engage your members of Congress than in person? A couple weeks ago, I was visiting our nation's capital and decided — on the advice of Cindy Changyit Levin — to attend the weekly constituent breakfast that Illinois's two senators hold in D.C. The bipartisan breakfast is a great opportunity for any Illinoisans in our nation's capital on a Thursday morning. It doesn't require a reservation and is an opportunity to speak to the senators in an intimate setting.
There were about twenty Illinois residents in attendance, along with scores of interns, staff, and of course Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk. The two men walked among the assembled constituents who, if they were anything like me, almost dropped their donuts and coffee when they saw the esteemed senators approaching.

Cindy Levin, RESULTS grassroots development associate and Chicago activist, is working tirelessly to raise awareness about children in extreme poverty. Her focus is on vaccines, which are a cost effective way to save the lives of countless children and make a huge impact in communities across the globe. During our recent RESULTS International Conference Cindy brought handwritten letters by children that were personally addressed to members of Congress asking them to take notice of this issue and take legislative action. As a result of her efforts, Cindy is not only helping children in extreme poverty, but is also providing other children an early lesson on activism and democracy by teaching them the importance of speaking up for those who often have no voice.

July 2011 Global Conference Call: nothing micro about it

The 2011 July Global Conf. Call focused on microfinance for reaching poorest.

Joanne Carter, Executive Director, started by giving a great account of the International Conference, noting that around 230 meetings were held with members of Congress from 29 states, and $16000 was raised.

The President of Freedom From Hunger, Chris Dunford, joined us as guest speaker on the call. Dunford gave a powerful account of the power of microfinance for reaching the very poor and how critical RESULTS' efforts have been in assuring that those who can benefit most have access. He talked about how the "engineers" of microfinance programs at USAID talk about how "impossible"

How effective is Head Start in comparison to other early childhood development settings? That is the question that a recent study released earlier this year by the American Psychological Association sought to find out. Entitled Head Start and Urban Children’s School Readiness: A Birth Cohort Study in 18 Cities, the report was the first of its kind in seeking out the benefits of Head Start in comparison to other, more defined, early childhood settings.

There are amazing stories that emerge from every RESULTS International Conference. The conference is a time for RESULTS activists and friends to learn, laugh, and lobby. It's a time when we all realize how important the work we do really is, because we get to see it en masse. It is often a refueling station for activists to be able to go back home and work in their communities--educating the public, generating media, and giving their members of Congress courage--until the next International Conference rolls around.

Advocacy is an essential part of the work we do at RESULTS, and change occurs when our thoughts and opinions turn from a whisper to a shout. On a grassroots level, this means not only educating your community about what we can do locally and globally to fight the worst effects of poverty, but also creating the political will to effect real change through legislation. As the former deputy press secretary for a high-profile U.S. Senator, I will tell you firsthand that congressional offices closely follow print media in their states or districts. So, this week as we ask you to write letters to the editor or opinion-editorials to your local papers, know that these do make a difference.

Zambian activist and patient advocate Carol Nyirenda delivered the following speech at RESULTS 2011 International Conference donor luncheon:

"Thank you for having me. This is the second International Conference (IC) that I am attending and it is always great to be here among the RESULTS family, where I always feel at home.
In 2001, when I lost my husband, I too fell ill after his death and was bedridden for months. I had very little hope of getting well especially when I was told after a biopsy taken that I had a skin cancer called Karposis Sarcoma. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of many years of pain and helplessness. I later developed a dry cough which, after many X-ray tests and going back and forth to the health centre, was finally diagnosed as Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis. Because I was getting little response from the treatment, I was then tested for HIV and confirmed to be positive."

The RESULTS 2011 International Conference (IC) also marked my first days on RESULTS staff and an intense first week it was (a special thank you to caffeine: you proved very necessary during the brimming four days and to those fighting jetlag). One of the first things that strike an IC newbie is the dedication and self-sacrifice of RESULTS’ and ACTION’s partners, staff, donors, and grassroots teams that come from around the world to discuss the work we are doing in communities locally and globally. Calling them an impressive bunch is an understatement.
Sunday began bright and early with informative and thoughtful pre-Conference sessions presented by ACTION and RESULTS/REF D.C. staffers Mandy Slutsker (“TB’S Impact on Women and Children”) and Sarah Beardmore and Jen Maurer (“Education for All: Focus on Women”). These were great introductions to — or perhaps reminders of — not only the literally life-changing work RESULTS and ACTION do, but the unfortunate lack of current focus on Tuberculosis as a disease that affects large numbers of women and children.

“Welcome, everyone. First, thank you for your commitment that got you here: the long distances you traveled — from Australia, India, Kenya, Zambia, from Alaska and Western Canada — and, also all the hurdles of life and of economics that you overcame to get here.
It’s been a week and the success of the 2011 RESULTS International Conference for RESULTS and the cause of ending poverty in our world is still palpable. We are so glad all those who attended the conference and were a part of this memorable experience were able to be there. We also greatly appreciate all the support those back home gave to those who did attend. Our annual conference is most definitely a team effort with everyone in the RESULTS family playing an important role. We thank everyone for their participation and support.

For those who could not attend, we want to give you some highlights of the festivities...

“The issue we are facing is not a budget deficit, it is a values deficit,” said Marian Wright Edelman as she spoke to a room full of grassroots volunteer activists from around the world at RESULTS’ International Conference this week. Everyone in the room listened attentively to her inspiring words, motivated to continue the fight to end poverty that many people in the room had been committed to for decades. As a new intern with RESULTS, it was amazing to be in a room with people who had been involved for 30 years (that’s 10 years before I was even born!). I had the opportunity to meet with teachers from around the country, college students from Massachusetts, a father-daughter pair from San Jose, California, an enthusiastic wig-wearing bunch from Canada, and a woman working on AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) work in Kenya. The attendants of this conference came from not only around the nation, but around the world. Though we were young and old, new and experienced, what brought us all together was a strong passion to protect and serve those who need it most — a passion that we hoped to convey to our representatives here on the Hill.

Last week, Director of Domestic Campaigns Meredith Dodson and I presented at the Bonner Summer Leadership Institute in Albany, New York. As a part of my work plan through the Congressional Hunger Center, I am working with students and engaging them in advocacy work. We were able to conduct multiple advocacy trainings for Bonner Scholars from across the nation. Including a pre-conference session where in district legislative staff came to the college campus for the students to lobby on Head Start and other RESULTS issues. It was exciting to see a group of college students advocating for the first time. Many of the students in the room previously had little contact with their members of Congress, and had only heard about Head Start earlier that day. The Congressional Staffers were really supportive and commented on how well the meetings went.

Trojan Horse: The Global Spending Cap and Why It Is Dangerous

In The Odyssey, the Greek hero Odysseus devised a plan to end the decade-long Trojan War. He built a giant wooden horse disguised as a gift to the gods with Greek soldiers hiding inside. The Trojans took the bait and moved the horse inside the impregnable walls of Troy. Once inside the city, the Greeks emerged from the horse and opened the gates to the city for the Greek army to flood in. The Trojans were finally defeated. Just as the citizens of Troy mistook a dangerous weapon for a gift, we are faced with a similar threat to domestic and international aid programs through what's called a "global spending cap."

Empowering Others to Tell Their Own Stories

I believe that empowering others to tell their own stories is an important component of advocacy. Anti-poverty advocates who have not experienced poverty should recognize their privilege when using their voice and power. The reality that folks living in poverty have to experience daily can be really hard to comprehend, and is easily forgotten. When trying to incorporate the voices of low income people it is important to realize there is a difference between speaking on behalf of, or finding the “token poor spokesperson” and empowering and mobilizing people living in poverty to share their story, be their own advocate, and help to create change. RESULTS works with our partners, and helps them along their journey of finding their political voice, while creating the political will to end poverty. By working alongside those who have experienced the impacts of Head Start, we will not only find that personal connection, but we are also igniting a spark by empowering parents and providers who seek change.

Reflections and Lessons Learned from the “To Catch a Dollar” Campaign

When RESULTS first started the planning process for our role in the “To Catch a Dollar” campaign, I felt a little nervous. As I joked to the amazing folks in our volunteer network, it had been years since I had even set foot in a movie theater; working a fairly demanding job and being the parent of a now 2.5 year old means there is little free time in my schedule. Besides I was never much of a moviegoer anyway and this kind of event was something I'd never mobilized around in my 15 year organizing career. I knew that it would also be a new experience for most of the people in our grassroots network, though in typical fashion most of them dove right in with enthusiasm and persistence. I've really appreciated all that we as an organization have learned during this campaign, and I think RESULTS has gained so much from this experience.

On Monday, April 18, RESULTS-Santa Fe and our local Whole Foods hosted a post-To Catch a Dollar gathering at the Whole Foods Community Room. We used the meeting to get acquainted with each other's work, spread the word about the national poverty awareness campaign following the To Catch a Dollar screenings, including the upcoming RESULTS webinars, and to begin discussion of advocacy needed in Santa Fe and our state/nation to transform how poverty is seen and addressed.

It's 6:10 am on RESULTS' day of observing the Hunger Fast and I've woken up with the realization of what observing this fast will mean today: no morning coffee?!?!? As a parent of an adorable and energetic 2 year old, I count on my dose of strong iced coffee to give me the energy to hit the ground running in the morning. But, that same toddler is the reason I am participating in this – while I've always had a commitment to social justice and loved the privilege of working with an amazing network of RESULTS activists, now I feel the urgency of our work to provide health, education and economic opportunity on a deeper level. I am thinking about how horrible it would be to not have the resources to make sure he could eat, much less not be able to answer his questions of “Why?” now that he is talking. The stories of those who have had to watch their children and others suffer, powerless to do anything, haunt me in a more profound way now that I can look at my child and imagine that situation.
