Merelyn Worthy: “I’m leaving a legacy of opportunity”
The congressman was impressed enough to agree to the groups’ requests — Merelyn was impressed enough to join RESULTS as a volunteer activist. After seeing RESULTS in action over the course of 20 years, she decided to take her relationship a step further — by naming RESULTS as a beneficiary in her will. Like many people without obvious heirs, Merelyn didn’t feel an urgent need to make a will. The turning point came when she had a cancer scare. “It was a wake-up call that I had to get this done. I don’t want the government to make decisions about my money. I want something positive to happen out of my passing.” That something was ensuring that she left a legacy to RESULTS and to a world where people create livelihoods with dignity and where all children have access to good nutrition, medical care, and basic education. ”I chose RESULTS because what it does is so important and the organization manages its money well,” Merelyn explained. “I’ve been involved with a number of nonprofits and I’ve seen a lot of waste. With RESULTS, my donation can get the biggest bang for the buck.” She found the process surprisingly easy. Simple bequest forms can be found online. And there are many types of planned gifts, from stocks to retirement plan assets to real estate. ”It’s always sad to lose somebody you love” Merelyn said, “but it cushions the blow a little if everything is in a row and you know the person’s wishes are taken care of. It’s the best gift you can give to your heirs and your friends — the knowledge that your money is going to an organization you value deeply. Make your wishes known.” If you’re ready to find out how to leave a legacy that provides dignity, hope, and opportunity for all people, please contact Nick Arena at narena@results.org or call (202) 783-4800 ext.105. |
